Carl Freedman built his reputation before he built a gallery. In 1990 he co-curated Modern Medicine, the Bermondsey warehouse show that gave Damien Hirst an early public platform, and in 1995 he curated Minky Manky at the South London Gallery, where Tracey Emin first showed her tent, Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995. That eye for artists ahead of the market carried into Counter Gallery, which he opened in Shoreditch in 2003 and later renamed Carl Freedman Gallery.
In 2019 he moved Carl Freedman Gallery to a former printworks in Margate, joining Turner Contemporary and the reopened Dreamland amusement park as part of the town’s re-emergence as a genuine gallery destination on the Kent coast. It was a considered bet on a place rather than a postcode, and it is exactly the kind of decision the Design 100 exists to recognise.
