100 Pages of Design: Travel is a special edition given entirely to the buildings people travel for. Fifteen hotels, resorts and restaurants are set out in sequence and credited to the architects, designers and studios who shaped them, from Jean-Michel Gathy’s restoration of the sixteenth century Palazzo Papadopoli for Aman Venice to Linda Boronkay’s reworking of Sir Prague around Czech Cubism, and Ben Thompson’s nine year return of Heckfield Place in Hampshire.
The thread running through the issue is that a journey is designed long before a guest arrives. A borehole drilled at fifty eight degrees, a salvaged tile, a ceiling height, a plant whose seed pods dry translucent: each one is a decision taken years earlier that a visitor meets simply as atmosphere. These hundred pages set out what those decisions were, and who made them.
