Why Natalia Miyar is in the Design 100
Natalia Miyar founded her London-based atelier in 2016 having trained as an architect, studying the history of art and architecture at Brown University before completing a master’s in architecture at the University of Miami. Born in Mexico to Cuban-American parents and raised largely in Miami, she has spoken of that early movement between cultures as the root of a practice that treats travel, craft and colour as material rather than decoration.
That grounding still shows in the work: interiors built from proportion and spatial sequence first, then layered with the tactile materials and confident colour her studio is known for, from private houses to her first hotel project, the Twenty Two on Grosvenor Square. She has since carried the same instinct for texture and heritage into product design, including a wallcovering for Fromental inspired by Cuban artist Wifredo Lam — a studio as comfortable setting a mood in fabric as it is in a floor plan.
