Why Safwan Dahoul is in the Design 100

Safwan Dahoul has spent nearly four decades painting a single body of work. Since the late 1980s his Dream series — canvases numbered rather than titled — has returned to one recurring female figure, rendered in grey, black and muted white within shallow, ambiguous interiors that read as psychological space as much as physical room. Trained in Damascus, and later at the Higher Institute of Plastic Arts in Mons, Belgium, he builds each canvas on a structural logic drawn from Picasso’s Cubism and ancient Assyrian relief.

That rigour has made him one of the most consequential figures in contemporary Arab painting, and, through years teaching in Damascus, an influential mentor to the generation that followed. Represented internationally by Ayyam Gallery, he has held successive solo exhibitions in Dubai, most recently The Eye in 2026, with work held in institutional and private collections across the region — a single idea, deepened for thirty years, matched by sustained recognition.
