Why Henrik Godsk is in the Design 100
Henrik Godsk works from Northern Jutland, having left the travelling funfair his family had run for seven generations at twenty-three to become a painter. He encountered Picasso and Modigliani as a teenager, and Modigliani’s flattened, elongated proportions still surface in the simplified figures that recur across his canvases. After a master’s in art and literature at Aalborg University, his mature practice settled into large-scale abstract compositions built from horizon lines, blocks of colour and reduced figuration rather than descriptive detail.
His work is represented by four galleries: Vigo in London; Ruttkowski;68, with spaces in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bochum, Paris and New York; Piermarq in Sydney; and Galleri Franz Pedersen in Horsens and Copenhagen. Recent solo exhibitions include Traveller’s Journal and Humans & Creatures at Wellington Arch, both in London, alongside shows in Paris, Tokyo and Sydney. The Danish Arts Foundation has supported several of his exhibitions, the first in 2011, and since 2019 he has worked as a full-time artist.
