Henrik Godsk works from Northern Jutland, having left the travelling funfair his family had run for seven generations at twenty-three to become a painter. He encountered Picasso and Modigliani as a teenager, and Modigliani’s flattened, elongated proportions still surface in the simplified figures that recur across his canvases. After a master’s in art and literature at Aalborg University, his mature practice settled into large-scale abstract compositions built from horizon lines, blocks of colour and reduced figuration rather than descriptive detail.
His work is shown through Vigo Gallery in London, Ruttkowski;68 and Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark, with recent solo exhibitions including Traveller’s Journal and Humans & Creatures at Wellington Arch, both in London, alongside shows in Paris, Tokyo and Sydney. Supported by the Danish Arts Foundation since 2011, he now also directs The Art Building in Vrå, a role that extends his influence on Danish visual art beyond his own studio practice.
