“Minimalism with a couture client list: Joseph Dirand’s Paris studio, founded in 1999, has built flagship stores for Balmain, Givenchy and Chloé without ever losing its own austere signature.”

Joseph Dirand founded his Paris studio in 1999, and the Balmain flagship on rue François Premier established the vocabulary that followed: stone, bronze and glass handled with enough restraint that the architecture, not the merchandising, carries the room. Givenchy, Chloé and Balenciaga have since trusted that same discipline for stores built to outlast a season’s trends, each one recognisably his without repeating the last.
The same rigour runs through restaurants and private homes. At Monsieur Bleu, the restaurant set inside the Palais de Tokyo, Dirand designed the banquettes and tables himself, and the room now reads as confidently as the museum around it. His residential work, from Saint-Germain-des-Prés apartments to houses further afield, follows the same method: strip a space back until only the load-bearing decisions remain, then let proportion, light and material finish the argument.
