“Pamela and Ramin Shamshiri's Los Angeles studio, founded in 2016, works a warmer, more textural strain of West Coast modernism — distinct from, and just as assured as, their Commune Design years.”

Why Studio Shamshiri is in the Design 100

Pamela and Ramin Shamshiri spent over a decade building Commune Design into one of Los Angeles’s most influential studios, work recognised with a Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award for the practice’s output between 2004 and 2015. In 2016 the siblings struck out on their own, founding Studio Shamshiri and settling the practice in the Thomson Building, a 1920s Hollywood landmark they restored themselves the following year.

Born in Tehran and raised in Los Angeles after their family left Iran, the Shamshiris bring that dual inheritance into the work: a Californian ease layered with the pattern, craft and material warmth of Persian design tradition. The studio’s range runs from restoring homes by architects including Rudolph Schindler and A. Quincy Jones to ground-up hospitality work such as New Orleans’s Maison de la Luz, each project handled with the same narrative instinct the siblings first developed staging events and film sets before they ever designed a room.
