Why Flack Studio is in the Design 100

David Flack founded his eponymous Melbourne studio in 2014, working from a base in Fitzroy that has grown into one of Australia’s most recognisable interior design practices. The studio’s rooms are built on colour, pattern and an appetite for maximalism that most practices avoid, pairing bold furniture-making with a curator’s instinct for combining eras, art and objects into interiors that read as considered rather than matched.

That confidence carried the studio into hospitality as well as residential work. Flack Studio’s interiors for the Ace Hotel Sydney, set in a converted commercial building in Surry Hills, translated the practice’s colour-driven residential language into a public setting for the first time and marked its move from private commissions into hotel design. That range, from closely held residential projects to a hotel that reads as unmistakably Flack Studio, places the practice among Asia Pacific’s most distinctive interior design voices.
