Why YSG Studio is in the Design 100

Yasmine Ghoniem founded YSG in Sydney in 2020, bringing architecture, interiors and curation into a single practice after seven years co-running Amber Road with landscape architect Katy Svalbe. Her interiors are built on saturated colour, layered pattern and a willingness to mix materials and eras that most studios keep apart. Egyptian on her father’s side and Australian on her mother’s, she has described her design language as one shaped by never quite belonging to a single place, and that outsider’s eye is what gives YSG’s rooms their charge.

The recognition followed fast. Ghoniem was named to Architectural Digest’s AD100 in 2022, just two years after opening YSG, and has remained on the list in the years since, including further AD100 editions in 2024. For a studio barely six years old, that is an unusually quick arrival, and it is why YSG stands among the sharpest, most colour-confident voices working in the Asia Pacific region today.
