DESIGN TRAVEL · DUBAI

Reading time: 5 min

Dubai is a city that tends to say luxury loudly, in gold and glass and sheer scale. The Dubai EDITION does the opposite, and that is exactly why it stands out. Ian Schrager’s design-led hotel answers the noise of Downtown with restraint, a triple-height dome, a hand-plastered spiral staircase and a palette of oak and stone, proving that the most radical thing a Dubai hotel can do is whisper.

A few steps from the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall, in the most spectacle-hungry corner of a spectacle-loving city, sits a hotel that has made a virtue of holding back. The Dubai EDITION opened in November 2021 on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, and it has since become one of the addresses that Dubai’s own design community claims as its own. That is a telling detail. In a market crowded with grand openings, this is the one locals talk about, and the reason is not a bigger chandelier or a taller atrium. It is a point of view.

The EDITION brand is the creation of Ian Schrager, the hotelier who, with Studio 54 behind him, effectively invented the boutique hotel and then set out to give that intimate, design-led sensibility a global stage in partnership with Marriott. The Dubai outpost, with interiors by LW Design in collaboration with the Ian Schrager Company in New York, is that idea landing in the desert. It is a hotel built on the conviction that craft, calm and composition can be more luxurious than opulence, and in this setting that conviction reads almost as a rebellion.

The lobby as a living room for the city

Every EDITION turns on a single idea that Schrager has carried since his earliest hotels: the lobby should not be a place you pass through, but a place you stay. The Dubai EDITION makes the case beautifully.

The arrival is a triple-height, dome-capped hall, dramatic and welcoming at once, its soaring ceilings and soft neutral tones establishing the whole property’s character in a single glance. Grandeur here is a matter of proportion and light rather than ornament, so the space feels effortless instead of overbearing. Subtle architectural lighting pools beneath the dome, and the mood shifts naturally across the day, from a calm daytime workspace to an atmospheric evening lounge framed by warm light and curated music.

At its heart stands the hotel’s signature gesture, a sculptural spiral staircase crafted in Venetian plaster that rises across three levels. Its sweeping form draws the eye upward and sets a visual rhythm for everything that follows. This is the “living room for Dubai” that the brand talks about, and it works because the design makes it comfortable to linger. Guests and residents drift in to work, meet and unwind, and the lobby becomes less a hotel formality than a genuine piece of the city’s social fabric.

The building, and a clever turn toward the view

It is worth pausing on the architecture, because there is a quiet piece of cleverness in how the hotel sits on its site. The EDITION occupies a tower rising to around 100 metres, set on a podium that has been rotated roughly 45 degrees off the street grid. That single move angles the building to open its best rooms and terraces directly toward the Burj Khalifa, turning the world’s tallest tower into the hotel’s borrowed centrepiece. It is the kind of decision guests never consciously notice and always feel, the reason so many spaces here seem to frame the skyline as if by happy accident. Nothing about it is accidental.

Guestrooms: quiet luxury, precisely composed

Where the public spaces are dynamic, the 275 guestrooms and suites deliberately exhale. The design turns minimalist and warm, built on natural materials, soft textures and a neutral palette that invites you to slow down.

Floor-to-ceiling windows flood each room with light and frame Downtown Dubai, the Burj Khalifa included, while balconies extend the connection to the city and offer a private place to pause above it. Inside, light oak flooring, straw-toned stone and smooth wooden panelling create a sense of calm and continuity, and the bathrooms answer in soft-toned marble, with deep oval tubs and EDITION’s custom Le Labo amenities heightening the ritual of a stay. Art plays a subtle but real part, curated pieces from delicate photography to minimalist compositions chosen to complement the interiors rather than compete with them. It is a restrained philosophy, and it lands most deeply with the people who notice craftsmanship, materiality and the quiet luxury of a room that leaves them room to think.

Dining as design, room by room

The EDITION treats each restaurant and bar as an extension of its aesthetic while giving every one its own personality, so the hotel becomes a small tour of moods.

Duomo, just off the lobby, is a celebration of Italian elegance beneath a soaring dome, where daylight pours over vibrant yellow velvet seating, terrazzo floors and statement lighting. After dark it turns theatrical, with digital artwork projected across the dome to create an ever-changing backdrop that blurs dining and visual storytelling. Jolie, a contemporary Mediterranean brasserie, pairs terrazzo, bronze accents and tan leather banquettes with lush greenery for the feel of a modern orangery, warmed by splashes of olive and gold. Tucked close to the lobby, Leon is the moodier counterpoint, a speakeasy of rich dark tones and curated lighting cut through with bold orange and red, quietly exclusive and aimed at a creative crowd. And up top, Thia Sky Lounge opens out entirely, framed by infinity-edge pools, private cabanas and head-on views of the Burj Khalifa, moving easily from sun-soaked afternoons to lively evenings. Each is a distinct room, yet each unmistakably belongs to the same hotel.

Why it resonates

In a city that rarely resists the urge to dazzle, The Dubai EDITION has built its identity on design integrity rather than sheer extravagance, and that is precisely what has made it a benchmark. It trades opulence for craft, composition and a series of carefully curated moments, from the interplay of light and form in the lobby to the soothing continuity of the guestrooms and the immersive character of the restaurants. Every space tells its own story, and yet all of them cohere within one clear vision.

The proof is in who fills it. The hotel has been embraced by Dubai locals as much as by visitors, its central position opposite the Dubai Mall making it a natural gathering place for a design-minded community that comes for a lobby coffee, dinner under Duomo’s dome or cocktails at Leon. That is the real achievement. The Dubai EDITION is more than a handsome hotel. It is a design destination that redefined luxury in the city by daring to make it calm, and in doing so it gave Dubai something it did not know it was missing: a place that feels less like a monument and more like a home for the city’s creative life.
