Why Xavier Lust is in the Design 100

Xavier Lust trained at Brussels’ Saint-Luc Institute, graduating in 1992, before opening his own studio and atelier to work in steel, stainless steel and aluminium. His signature technique — folding and curving a single sheet of metal without a mould — turns flat material into forms that read as one continuous gesture, closer in spirit to sculpture and structural engineering than to conventional furniture-making.

That approach found its clearest expression in Le Banc, the bent-aluminium bench that opened his long-running collaboration with MDF Italia after its 2000 debut at Milan’s Salone Satellite, and which now sits in the permanent collections of Tate Modern, MoMA and the Design Museum Ghent. It is that rare combination of technical rigour and visual restraint — a single sweeping form doing the work of a joint-and-frame construction — that earns Xavier Lust his place in the Design 100.
